The Straits Times — Client Story
Client Testimonial Feature — The Straits Times
Featuring Dr Tong Pei Yein, hand surgeon at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, who sought pregnancy loss coaching with Vernessa Chuah in 2022 following her fourth miscarriage.
Vernessa Chuah, a pregnancy loss coach and certified grief recovery specialist, has seen a 20 per cent increase in recent years for pregnancy loss coaching. She has undergone two miscarriages and the termination of a pregnancy where the baby was discovered to have omphalocele, a birth defect in which the intestine and other abdominal organs are located outside the body.
“I feel like I can shine a light for these women, holding a safe space for them. In our culture, we’re used to surpassing emotion, and we’re not taught to process pain and hurt — it’s ‘let’s move on’. Through giving a voice to their story, they can find healing. They feel seen, heard and acknowledged.”— Vernessa Chuah
Dr Tong Pei Yein, 43, has had four miscarriages since 2015. She contacted Vernessa for pregnancy loss coaching in 2022 after her last miscarriage in March that year. Her gynaecologists attributed her losses to statistical odds and her increasing maternal age, but a medical investigation in 2022 revealed she had antiphospholipid syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that can cause blood clots and miscarriages.
She recalls the brokenness she felt when her baby’s heartbeat weakened and slowed, and finally flickered out across the ultrasound scans. It was difficult talking to others, even family members, about her miscarriages.
“People are afraid of tears. They may think, I’m afraid she’s going to cry, and I don’t know what to do about it. I really wanted to talk to someone.”— Dr Tong Pei Yein
Through pregnancy loss coaching, she articulated her feelings of sadness and confusion, as well as gratefulness for the seven-year-old daughter she already has with her engineer husband, and let go of the guilt she felt. She had a breakthrough during a coaching session held amid greenery at East Coast Parkway, with paper and colouring materials in hand.
“In the quiet of nature, not striving and not trying to achieve anything, I realised that I was enough. I had done my best. I saw the children I lost in every child playing at the beach. They seemed to be in the sky when I looked up. I realised that my babies are in my heart.”— Dr Tong Pei Yein

✨ Signature Approach
Inspired by the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, Vernessa’s method honours loss while gently supporting clients in rebuilding their lives with strength and meaning.

Allowing emotions to be fully felt and expressed — in a space that is safe, witnessed, and without judgment.
Step 03
Shifting guilt, shame, and self-blame — and gently changing the narratives that keep bereaved parents stuck.
Step 04
